‘Tenby Seascape 2’ by Jon Houser

Local artist Jon Houser is a contemporary impressionist oil painter inspired by every day life. He paints ‘en plein air’ (on the spot, in open air) – often in all weathers, setting up his easel wherever the fancy takes him……

“I am trying to look for shapes and colour balance rather than looking for a “nice” scene with my plein air paintings and find this aspect of painting interesting” explains Jon “…I try to keep focussed on keeping the painting loose and not getting side tracked with detail which would draw me away from my initial inspiration for the painting. It would be so easy to start painting fiddly detail in the distant hotel buildings (see the Tenby Seascpe pic above) but I resist. Again, a strolling figure quickly painted in where I feel is the right place helps with contrast and balance. Since I started painting plein air a couple of months ago, I have given a lot of thought to my colour palette and have reduced it to 5 colours + white. This I think has helped me achieve a good colour balance with this painting.”

Born in Surrey in 1958, Jon completed a 4 year apprenticeship as a mechanical fitter at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Aberporth. He started painting in 1995 after taking an Access to Art course at Carmarthen Collage, where his talent for painting was recognised.

Jon is also influenced by his love of the steam railway and in 2012 he became an associate member of the Guild of Railway Artists and has exhibited at the Royal Dockyard, Chatham and the Severn Valley Railway with the Guild of Railway Artists “Railart” exhibitions. He has work in private collections throughout the country and in 2012, his oil painting “The Castle at Neyland” was purchased by the National Library of Wales for the National Collection, Aberystwyth.
