Carmarthenshire Art College Large Gallery Event

‘Of Landscape’

This is an exciting group exhibition including work from current students and past graduates of the BA Fine Art Painting Course from the School of Art, Film and Media at Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthen. It brings together a selection of past and present students spanning ten years of the course.  All exhibiting artists engage with the notion of landscape in some way within these works. Living and studying in West Wales, it is not surprising that landscape occurs as a central theme for many of these artists.

The exhibition offers a diverse and contemporary approach to the subject of landscape, exploring both real and imagined spaces, with artists motivated by either personal or universal concerns regarding land, landscape and nature.  It is fitting that the exhibition is situated in the striking grounds of Picton Castle, a place of intense inspiration for the late British landscape painter Graham Sutherland. Following in the footsteps of Sutherland, some of the work on show is made in direct response to the site of Picton castle and its surrounding area.  Other works seen here form part of each artists’ continuing enquiry into place and space and have been inspired by various locations and other references to land and landscapes.

The exhibition runs from 1st July – 28th July 2011
