About the Garden Club
Garden Club meetings take place on the third Thursday of each month and new members are always welcome. We’re a friendly bunch!
When meeting at Picton, we commence at 10.00am and meet either in Maria’s Restaurant and Deli or the Lecture Theatre and if we are making a trip beyond Picton, we meet at the host site 10.30am. We always try to keep members up to date, so we do e-mail reminders or further details for each meeting.
Waterproof clothing and boots are generally recommended! Entrance fees to other gardens and refreshments are rarely more than £5 – £10, but most people bring a little more cash, as often there are plants to buy. Also, unless you have a smart phone, cameras are useful as you invariably see a plant you want to identify or remember!
We are also delighted to say that we are more than happy for Members to bring along to meetings any plants which they would like to swop with others.
Take a look at our 2016 programme of meetings and events to give you an idea of what’s coming up this year:
March 17 – The first meeting of the year at Picton, so that we can all meet up again, refresh our memories for names and faces and see what the latest developments are in the gardens at Picton. We hope that Roddy, our Head Gardener, will bring us up to date with the changes and projects at Picton and take us for a tour round the garden. It’s a welcome to new members, catchup with old friends, and an enjoyable trip round the beautiful grounds of Picton so that even our new members will know just how extensive and lovely they are to walk round.
April 21st – Rhosygilwen Mansion, near Cilgerran. 20 acres of gardens, light wooded grounds, 1 acre walled garden, fully productive of fruit, vegetables and flowers, with authentically restored Edwardian greenhouses.
May 19th – Ffynone Mansion near Boncath. This was highly recommended by a member: an 18c Nash house set in 20 acres of landscaped woodland and gardens. Suggested because May is the best time to see the rhododendrons. The tea shop will seat 20, the charge will be £10 a head including refreshments.
June 16th – The Cors, at Laugharne. Wooded valley bordering river, bog gardens with ponds, gunnera, bamboos and tree ferns, including unusual architectural and exotic planting. Refreshments available. We were hoping to combine this with Delacorse, another lovely estuary garden, but sadly this is one of the ones closed for the year due to building work.
July 21st – Treffgarne Hall, again another suggestion from a member, this is a Georgian house in a stunning hilltop location with panoramic views. Walled garden, with double rill and pergolas, borderline hardy exotics, summer broad walk, sculptures and stumpers. The owner is interested in challenging the boundaries of what can be grown in Pembrokeshire The charge would be around £5-£6 depending on numbers.
August 18th – Dyffryn Fernant Gardens, near Fishguard. 6 acres including ornamental grasses, marsh with wild flowers, views of the Preseli landscape and many highly cultivated areas. Normally they wouldn’t open till 12, but will open at 1030 for us as long as we are at least 10. The gardens will be £6 a head, teas in the library at £5 extra.
September 15th – LLwyngarreg gardens at Llanfallteg. We visited these gardens two years ago, and we were all amazed at how much two people could do when one was still working as a teacher. Now the host has retired, and the message is that the garden is even more exciting now that he can spend all his time on it, and the developments are well worth seeing.
October 20th – back at Picton again for the final meeting of the year and we will be announcing a Guest Speaker at a later date.
