Jekka McVicar – biography

Over 25 years ago, Jekka started her Organic Herb Farm, which is certified by the Soil Association, where she grows more than 650 species of culinary, medicinal and aromatic herbs from around the world. She has been awarded 62 RHS Gold Medals for her herb displays including 14 at the Chelsea Flower show, and has also won the Tudor Rose Award for best floral display at the 2007 and 2008 Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Jekka was also awarded the RHS Lawrence Medal, for the best exhibit at any RHS show during 2009.

Of the five books Jekka has had published, both ‘Jekka’s Complete Herb Book’ and ‘Seeds’ have been reprinted in association with the RHS. Her latest book, ‘Jekka’s Herb Cookbook’ was published by Ebury Press in June 2010.

Jekka contributes to BBC Gardener’s World Magazine, BBC Good Food, Grow Your Own, Gardens Illustrated and the gardening section of the Guardian Newspaper. Jekka has appeared in many television programmes including Jamie Oliver’s ‘Oliver’s Twist’, Rick Stein’s ‘Food Heroes’, BBC Gardener’s World, ‘Great Garden Detectives’, the Alan Titchmarsh show and Ready Steady Cook.

She regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio. This includes Woman’s Hour and the Food Programme on BBC Radio 4, and local BBC radio stations. Jekka has also written and presented a series on BBC Radio 4 called ‘Herbs Pure and Simple’.

Jekka has created herb gardens for Jamie Oliver, Sheepdrove Organic Farm, and Babington House, in addition to many other clients, private and public.

She is President of the West of England Herb Group and is a member of RHS Council; the RHS Fruit, Vegetable and Herb Committee; the RHS Conservation and Environment Advisory Committee; the RHS Nominations and Appointments Committee and the RHS Three Counties Agricultural Society Joint Committee.
