The Picton Castle Galleries Re-launch for the 2011 Season

This season the historic galleries in the Castle Courtyard are being re-launched as a major arts venue for Pembrokeshire.  The galleries were developed in the late 20th century to exhibit the paintings and drawings of Graham Sutherland in spaces designed by him..  He was inspired by the Pembrokeshire landscape and was a frequent visitor to Picton as he was a friend of the Hon Hanning Philipps.

The Picton Castle Trust is proud to continue the legacy by using the galleries as exhibition spaces for works by living artists and craftspeople.  For 2011 we have a full programme of exhibitions in both galleries which changes throughout the year.  The details of all the 2011 exhibitions are on the new Picton Castle website www.pictoncastle.co.uk

In the large Gallery April and May 2011 we have an exhibition of new works by Pembrokeshire artist IAN JACOB titled “In Sutherland’s footsteps”

With its bold execution, vibrant palette and innovative use of mixed media, Ian Jacob’s work offers a fresh and arresting perspective on the landscape that inspired some of Graham Sutherland’s greatest paintings.  These new  works are inspired by landscapes of the Cleddau estuary and the Woodland Gardens at Picton Castle

Born and raised in the Pembrokeshire village of Llangwm, Ian has walked in Sutherland’s footsteps since childhood. His intimate knowledge of the landscape surrounding his riverside home informs this body of work, which is exhibited in the same gallery that once housed many of Sutherland’s Pembrokeshire paintings.

In April in the small Gallery we have an exhibition Welsh Landscapes & Cottages” of the works of Alun Williams a Ceredigion artist famous for his watercolours of Welsh vernacular buildings and landscape.

In May we are privileged to host an exhibition of new and antique Welsh quilts from the venerated Jen Jones collection, including pretty floral, vibrant patchworks and wholecloths with wonderful stitching.  Some of these quilts will be for sale.  From 1st May – 31st May.

Jen Jones has been buying, selling and collecting Welsh Quilts for more than thirty years.  Over that time, she has acquired a deep knowledge and understanding of the art and craft of Welsh Quilt-making.  Jen is exhibiting for the very first time at Picton Castle.
