Picton Castle and Gardens

Volunteering and The work of Picton Castle Trust

The castle and gardens at Picton have been in the care of the Picton Castle Trust since 1987 (Charity Registration No. 519326).  The work of the Trust is to manage and restore this unique part of Welsh heritage, ensuring public access and supporting education. The charitable work of the trust is to:

  • Conserve and restore the castle, its original collection of art, books and antiques and the 50 acres of  gardens.
  • Provide public access to the castle and gardens.
  • To support and promote education associated with Picton and its history.

Our main charitable purpose is the restoration of the castle and gardens. Between 2018-2023, the Trust completed a £1.1 million restoration of the walled garden. Work is now focused on restoring the castle and the 18th century water cascades (in Peach House Woods).

Restoration of the castle will be a multi-million-pound project. This work will enable public access to areas currently unsafe and ensure that this wonderful house, with its rich and important history is protected for  future generations. Much of the upper stories of the castle are currently derelict or semi-derelict, the roof needs considerable work as do the walls and windows. This is a large scale project that is likely to take time to complete.

In the mean time we actively raising funds for a smaller restoration project that we can complete in the near future to enable access to the public, this is the restoration of the Muniment’s Room. This delightful little room, just off the library, would have been used for storing the most important legal documents. It is actually a medieval room, with 18th Century wood panelling. All sales from our pre-loved bookshop will be dedicated to restoring this room.

If you would like to help support the work of the Trust in caring for this wonderful building you can so by donating on site or contacting the office on 01437 751326.

None of this is possible without the ongoing support of you, our visitors and our volunteers.

Thank you
