Picton Castle and Gardens

Wildlife Week

Wildlife Week

They say time flies when you are having fun and that is certainly true working at Picton. We are busy planning our events calendar for the year and we cannot believe that we are already gearing up for Wildlife Week again. This is the first event we hold each year, taking place throughout February half term.

Due to the pandemic we have adapted many of our events to take place predominantly outside in our wonderful gardens rather than inside the castle. Last October our family Halloween event was a huge success and we actually welcomed more visitors than ever before over the October half term, even despite some adverse weather! We want to celebrate the beauty of our spectacular gardens year round with fun family events with plenty to keep the little ones occupied, including trails, activities and puzzles. Wildlife week is a celebration of British wildlife and we hope to make your visit here a learning experience too with fun facts dotted around the gardens and ideas on what you can do at home to increase biodiversity in your own garden or outside space. The Welsh Owl Garden & Zoo will also be holding informative talks, flying displays and handling sessions. We hope that you are able to join us from Monday 21st February – Friday 25th February.

A pupil from a local school is currently on placement with us for work experience and she has carried out some research on wildlife we have at Picton that we would like to share:

“Wales is filled with a numerous amount of animals. From puffins to polecats, there are over 50,000 different species of animals across the country and the coast surrounding it.

At Picton Castle there are many different types of wild animals around, especially as spring is near and the weather is starting to warm up. We have some animals that are here all year round, like robins, sparrows and wood peckers who you can hear now.

We have many native birds of prey that swoop around the gardens but if you wanted a closer look at the magnificent birds then the best place would be the Welsh Owl Garden and Zoo here at Picton Castle with 25 different breeds such as Kestrels, Hornbills, Snowy owls, Barn owls and Burrowing owls, but it’s not just birds that they have at the gardens they also have two otters called River and Freddie. The Walled Garden is home to Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats, Brown Long-eared bats and Soprano Pipistrelles as well as the variety of spectacular plants and flowers. If you come when it is warm then you will be able to see some of the common lizards roaming around the place, frogs near the ponds, squirrels running up and down the trees and there may even be some slow worms emerging.”
